ÉTAPE

Étude sur la transition, l'adaptation et la persévérance à l'école

ETAPE is a study conducted under the supervision of professors Catherine Ratelle and Stéphane Duchesne from the Education Faculty at Laval University. This longitudinal study has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canda (SSHRC) and the Fonds Québecois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC).

Two cohorts of participants committed to the study. Students completed a questionnaire each year from Grade 6 until the end of high school. Students’ parents and their siblings were also invited to participate.

The first objective of this longitudinal study was to identify the factors contributing to academic achievement and perseverance of students undergoing a school transition (elementary to high school, etc.).

The second objective was to track youths’ educational pathway to understand why some students drop out of school while others persist. What characterizes these students? Which aspects facilitate or hinder their motivation and at what stage are these more determinant?
